explained that arrears arose
2. From difficully Mr. Pauncefote being evidently the party most suitable to fill the vacant office, whilst on the other hand, that gentleman could not hold it without entailing on himself a serious pecuniary sacrifice.
As however, I felt it right in the interests of the Public to make the offer to Mr. Pauncefote I accordingly did so and now enclose his reply, consenting to accept the acting appointment of Chief Justice "ad interim" and resigning his appointment of Judge of the Summary Court.
I consider this Government is under great obligation to Mr. Pauncefote for the pecuniary sacrifice which he has made, and which at once enabled me to provide satisfactorily for the duties of the other Offices by appointing Mr. Pollard, Q.C. to be Acting Attorney General, and Mr. J.C. Whyte to be Acting Judge of the Summary Court. I hope to receive Your Lordship's sanction for these provisional appointments.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient humble servant;
Richard Graves MacDonnell
Governor.
